While the agreement still needs to be ratified by members of WGA, which represents more than 11,000 writers, this marks a significant turning point in the nearly five-month-long strike. The current walkout came close to beating the longest strike in WGA history, a 1988 strike that lasted 154 days. “But we are, as of today, suspending WGA picketing.” The Guild encouraged members to join the picket line for the actors’ strike instead this week. One person close to the matter said that, as a result, writers could potentially be back to work in just days. People familiar with the matter on Sunday night voiced optimism the studios’ agreement with the writers will also allow it to reach a deal with the actors.

Los Angeles CNN —On what is usually the first Friday of every month, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics releases its Employment Situation Summary, or monthly jobs report, formally known as the “nonfarm payroll” report. Many farm workers are seasonalBut why does this key employment report only tally “nonfarm” workers? However, despite the “nonfarm” nomenclature, a growing share of farm workers does make it into the BLS job report tally. Historically, the job of counting farm workers falls to the US Department of Agriculture due to its relationships with farms across the country. But farmers aren’t the only workers the jobs report excludes: Elected officials, domestic workers, some members of the clergy and people in many other nontraditional professions are also left behind in the official jobs report data.

So how should central banks coordinate when their economies are headed in opposite directions? And since the start of the pandemic, international monetary policy has looked striking similar. From the United States to Saudi Arabia to Malaysia, many major world economies slashed interest rates to historically low levels in March 2020 to stimulate their economies amid Covid lockdowns. Central bankers do “talk a lot, and we see each other quite a bit,” said Andrew Bailey, Bank of England’s president, at a June event hosted by the European Central Bank. “Adopting formal global monetary policy cooperation could plausibly erode central bank credibility and public support for central bank independence,” former Federal Reserve Vice Chair Richard Clarida said at a 2021 Asia Economic Policy Conference.

Los Angeles CNN —Striking hotel workers in Southern California filed a complaint on Monday with the National Labor Relations Board alleging that the hotels were “committing and/or condoning violence” after a fight on the picket line, their union announced. Video shared by Unite Here 11 – a union representing dishwashers, room attendants, bellhops and others – shows a disturbance on a picket line outside a Santa Monica hotel on Saturday. The video shows people in suits scuffling with picketers, but it’s unclear who the people in suits are or what happened before the video started. But Pete Hillan, a spokesperson for the California Hotel and Lodging Association, said that the workers are engaging in “increasingly aggressive actions” while on the picket lines, and accused union representatives of kicking over safety barriers. Since declaring a strike in early July, hotel workers have been demonstrating periodically outside many different Southern California hotels amid demands of increased wages and better benefits.

Wait times for rides and attractions at both resorts have shortened, according to analysts who track theme park attendance. Disney CEO Bob Iger attributed Disney World’s recent decline in wait times to an overall slump in Central Florida tourism. Iger told CNBC he did not have “long-term concerns” about Disney’s theme parks. For Universal’s Florida parks, every month since March has seen lower average wait times, according to the site. Pareti said she spends between four and six days per week at Disney’s parks and visits Universal parks, as well.

Amid a tight labor market, many were also able to find a better job, with better pay. The combination of a tight labor market and structural change from the pandemic catalyzed job reshuffling over the past three years, he said. The BLS shows the rate of job growth is up in the construction, manufacturing, health, education and food services industries. Despite the apparent end of the Great Resignation, the job market continues to hum along; the US economy added 339,000 jobs in May. The fact that quit rates are down indicates that there’s low confidence in the job market,” Kriegel said.

Why do businesses keep raising their prices?
  + stars: | 2023-06-09 | by ( Samantha Delouya | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Los Angeles CNN —After two years of surging prices, economists still can’t agree on what has caused the world’s worst inflation crisis in decades. The survey of 700 businesses across New York, Atlanta and Cleveland found that strength of customer demand outranked all other factors that companies weigh when setting prices, including steady profit margins and overall inflation. More than 82% of businesses surveyed said demand factored into their pricing decisions, while only 52% of businesses said they take the overall rate of inflation into account when setting prices. Are customers too willing to pay higher prices? Murphy said the restaurant has since raised prices more than once to keep up with inflation.

Los Angeles CNN —Donald Trump’s entrance into the NFT world came at the worst possible moment. It bears noting, however, that despite the bad timing Trump’s NFT collection has shot to the top of NFT marketplace OpenSea’s ranking and has raked in more than $1.4 million since its launch. On the Trump Digital Trading Cards website, the Trump collection claims to be “sold out” and the floor price for a single card has risen to $177.99, according to analytics site CoinGecko. SPACs boomed in 2020 with celebrities and investors piling in, but rising interest rates and a troubled stock market has led to a dramatic fall in SPAC value. Trump’s entrance into the SPAC world came after the boom.

This year they joined the Beverly-Vermont CLT, one of at least five in Los Angeles and more than 200 nationwide. While CLTs are a solution, Ventura admits there are — and should be — other affordable housing options to adequately address the crisis. However, efforts to transform them into affordable housing in some neighborhoods have proven controversial among existing homeowners.
Los Angeles CNN —Closing arguments are expected Wednesday in the Los Angeles sexual assault trial against former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, who faces two counts of forcible rape and five counts of sexual assault involving four women – a model, a dancer, a massage therapist and a producer. Those alleged incidents are not being charged as part of this case because they happened outside of Los Angeles County. Siebel Newsom described an hours-long “cat-and-mouse period” that preceded her assault. “What you’re doing today is exactly what he did to me,” Siebel Newsom said, accusing defense lawyer Mark Werksman of “mental jujitsu” and verbal manipulation. Midway through the trial, four of the original 11 charges against Weinstein tied to a fifth Jane Doe were dropped without explanation.

Los Angeles CNN —Strippers at the Star Garden topless dive bar in North Hollywood will soon receive ballots to hold an election for collective bargaining, which may result in the first stripper union in the US in more than a decade. On Nov. 7, the NLRB will count the votes from Star Garden dancers, entertainers and DJs, determining if they will join the Actors Equity Association, a union of performers and other show business professionals. The facts are clear: The workers at Star Garden are entitled to a union election,” said Andrea Hoeschen, assistant executive director and general counsel for Actors’ Equity Association. “Most of the purportedly eligible voters have never been employees of Star Garden; they were in fact, and in law, merely lessees with no employment relationship,” Gaylord and Linker wrote. Since then, the dancers have been picketing most weekends outside the Star Garden, dressed in themed costumes, urging patrons to go to different clubs.
